Our expertise in contaminated land will allow us to identify, assess, and manage the risk of ground contamination using a phased risk approach. The phased approach offers a time and cost effective solution to our clients by determining the potential liabilities or risks posed by a site, based on site specific criteria. Our phased approach allows us to move through preliminary assessments and generic qualitative risk assessments, through to detailed quantitative risk assessments, derivation of site specific remedial targets and validation processes.
Phase One - This entails a site walkover by a trained engineer and a desk based assessment using third party data. This allows us to build a site history and identify any sources of contamination. If the contamination is deemed to pose a risk to potential receptors then a phase two will be required.
Phase Two - A site investigation will be designed based on the site constraints and contaminants of concern. The investigation will allow the collection of samples that will be tested at accredited laboratories. Based on the laboratory results, the risk to receptors can be quantified and evaluated. If the contamination is proven to exist, beyond which site specific assessment criteria and remedial targets can mitigate, and is considered to present a risk then a remediation strategy will be required.
Phase Three - The remediation strategy will provide cost effective solutions for managing and removing the risk from contamination. The report will outline the methodology for remediation.
Phase Four - This is a verification report to confirm that the client has undertaken the actions detailed in the Phase Three remediation strategy, and has remediated the land to a suitable standard for the proposed end use, and it can no longer be classed as contaminated land.
The historic legacy of the metalliferous mining industry in the southwest has led to a dual legacy, one which was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006, the other which has led to large tracts of land and water courses left with residual contamination long after the mining activity has ceased. As a result, historical mine sites are now the source of half the metals found in rivers, as much as all permitted discharges from industry combined. Our specialist team at Karn Geoservices has extensive experience of such sites and a proven track record of successfully investigating, remediating and validating these formally industrialised sites.
